Cascade Brewing Barrel House in Photographs
Name: Cascade Brewing Barrel House
Location: Portland, OR
Date of Visit: Fall 2014
Brief Description: Cascade Brewing is a pioneer of the northwest style sour beer movement. They chose to create sour ales (though they purposefully stayed away from trying to recreate Belgian style sour ales) and avoid the “hops arm race”. Employing lactobacillus, an acid bacteria that produces moderate levels of acidity and sour flavors, they began their sour journey in 2005. By 2006, they were producing the base beer that would then be aged for up to a year in wine, port and whiskey oak barrels.
Cascade Brewing was founded in 1998 by owner Art Larrance and brewmaster Ron Gansberg.
The brewery employs an abundant supply of wine barrels from the nearby wine country and access to delicious and plentiful local fruit.
Opened in September 2010, the Cascade Brewing Barrel House – aka House of Sour – in SE Portland, features more than 24 rotating taps, with a predominantly sour lineup at any given time.
The Cascade Brewing Barrel House also offers a number of bottled products.
Their blending house currently houses more than 1,400 French oak, Kentucky Bourbon and Northwest wine barrels – plus nine foudres.
Many of their beers have received medals from the Great American Beer Festival.
These beers have aggressive tart notes that are balanced by residual sugars, fruits, spices and the oak they use.
Indoor and outdoor seating is available.
