Opened in 1983 by Daisy Claeys, ‘t Brugs Beertje (Bruges’ Little Bear) has developed a cult following of connoisseur beer drinkers from throughout the world. Located in a building from 1632 this legendary pub offers about 300 different brews, including five on tap (“van ‘t vat” in Dutch). All Belgian beer styles are represented. In fact, it could easily take you 20 minutes just to review their almanac of beer. However, for me the beer selection process starts very simply – pick a beer (or beers) on draft that I may never have the opportunity to try again. During my last visit, I selected a 2-year, unblended Oude Lambic from Brouwerij Boon that was on draft. What a tart, refreshing delight!

In 2017, Daisy Claeys handed over the Brugs Beertje to Dries Brouckaert. However, the pub still offers the same congenial and fun atmosphere accompanied by a fantastic selection of beers. The beer-knowledgeable staff can help you in making a drinking selection. They are well versed in beer styles, proper beer pouring and presentation, as well as providing beer suggestions for anyone visiting.

‘t Brugs Beertje provides snack food, including a cheese board with five types of cheeses and a few pâtés.

A wide range of great beers coupled with a congenial, fun atmosphere drive the popularity of ‘t Brugs Beertje. You can expect to meet a wide cross section of fascinating people at the Beertje. And the seating arrangements in the pub encourages communal conversation among strangers. During the tourist off-season is when you are most likely to find locals frequenting the pub.

Decorated with wood paneled walls and stylish bar ephemera, ‘t Brugs Beertje exudes a cozy atmosphere that will make you feel welcome immediately. Hanging above the bar is a gleaming selection of various beer glasses. For Belgian beers, the breweries tailor a unique glass for their specific beer.
