Black Xantus Imperial Stout (11% ABV / 60 IBUs) – This batch of Black Xantus was released in April 2013. Total Beverage Solution actually refers to the style as Imperial Java Stout and states that Black Xantus is barrel aged for 6 months in a combination of Bourbon, retired Firestone Union, and wine barrels and then infused with fair-trade, organic coffee from local roaster Jobella. This beer won a Gold Medal at the 2013 Denver International Beer Competition. Black Xantus pours a deep dark brown to black color with tan foam head and tiny bubbles. The beer has a wonderful aroma of dark chocolate and bourbon (the bourbon smells somewhat like raisins) that is not overpowering. Black Xantus is full-bodied and creamy. There is an eloquent integration of rich flavors that include coffee beans, dark chocolate, sweet bourbon, and black bread. An alcohol warmth infusion is perfectly achieved. The finish includes a mild dark chocolate bitterness with some peppery spice. This is an outstanding beer and I long for more.
