Beer Noir : Death & Taxes

The moon shined bright overhead as it tried to expose Sam lurking in an alley.  The city was silent, luring him into its murky depths, promising answers that always seemed to slip through his fingers like smoke. He stood there, the moon’s glow casting ominous shadows on his face. In his hand, Sam held a beer dark as the night, except for its exquisite creamy foam head.

“Another case,” he muttered. The clock tower loomed above him, its hands frozen at midnight. Detective Sam Diamond wondered if time had stopped altogether in this forsaken place. The streets were empty, save for the occasional ghostly reminders of the lives that had vanished for the night.

His mind raced, piecing together fragments of a puzzle that seemed to have no solution. A cryptic note read “Death & Taxes”.

Moonlight Brewing Co.,” he read on the faded sign across the road. As he drank, Sam’s beer tasted roasty and bitter, like coffee. But the beer was deceptively light-bodied and dangerously quaffable.

Sam’s eyes looked up to the moon, its glow illuminating the empty street. “What are you telling me?” he asked the moon as if it held the answers. But the moon remained indifferent, casting its light on the empty alleyways, revealing nothing but damp walls and broken dreams.

As the last drop of beer slid down his throat, Sam made a silent promise. He would unravel the mystery of “Death & Taxes”, no matter the cost. The moon bore witness to his promise.

And so, Detective Sam Diamond stepped into the night, fedora pulled low, trench coat billowing. The clock struck midnight, and the city held its breath. Guided by the moonlight and fueled by the enchantment of his beer, Sam walked down the street in the hope of solving the mystery of “Death & Taxes”.
